Up for sale is an 1873 Springfield Trapdoor cavalry carbine chambered in .45-70 Government. The Trapdoor was the standard U.S. Army service firearm after the Civil War and saw widespread use during the Indian Wars of the late 1800s. This shorter cavalry version was issued to mounted troops.

The rifle uses the classic hinged “trapdoor” breech system that allowed loading from the rear instead of the muzzle, making it much faster to reload than earlier muskets.

Included with the rifle is a box containing 19 cowboy-loaded .45-70 rounds, which are reduced-pressure loads commonly used for older rifles like this.
