LSC on Chronicle WCVB-TV

In case you missed it, the Lowell Sportsmen’s Club was featured on a recent segment of Chronicle on WCVB-TV Channel 5. It’s now available to watch online, after originally airing Monday night, December 14, 2020 at 7:30pm.

The show covers stress-busting during the pandemic, and came to the Lowell Sportsmen’s Club to highlight trap and skeet shooting. As we members know, shooting in general is a great way to relax and have fun with friends, but breaking clays adds extra satisfaction.

2020 has been a long year, and although a vaccine is almost here for all of us, everyone still needs ways to safely get out of the house and get your mind off of things for awhile. Trap shooters are naturally distanced by the shooting stations, outdoors in the fresh air, and smiling more and more with each broken clay.

Members of the club hosted Chronicle producers, explained how trap and skeet are played, and coached them through breaking some targets. Be sure to watch the episode – and get down to the club on Sundays at 1pm or Wednesdays at 10:30am and shoot!

Big Bore Range Construction Update

Update December 26, 2020

Beginning Monday, December 28, 2020, the Big Bore Range will be closed so construction can continue.

Welch Welding will begin moving the NBS structures into place, and the range will remain closed until the work is completed. We do not have a firm timeframe for how long it will be closed, though we do not expect it to be too long. Much will depend on the arrival of some additional materials, weather, and ground and work conditions.

We will provide updates as soon as we have more information. Thanks to all members for your continued patience and support of this project.

Update December 22, 2020

Big Bore Baffles Being Installed!
We got word from Welch Welding that the rubber for our baffles has finally arrived. This is what was holding up the final installation of the baffles. They plan to be on site either today or tomorrow to install the posts and baffles at the range. John A. and John L. went the extra mile last week and plowed the access road to the range clear to make sure they have access.

The work will require of course that the range be closed while the work is getting done. Will update as we know more.

Update October 19, 2020

Big Bore Range & Indoor Range Reopened
The weekend’s work on the Big Bore Range, and on the Clubhouse air conditioner, has been completed, and both ranges are again open to members for use. Please watch this page for future changes to range status.

Update October 17, 2020

Big Bore Range closure for Sunday, 10/18
Big bore range will be closed again tomorrow as work on the range project continues. Anyone wishing to help out is welcome to show up starting at 8:00AM tomorrow morning. We can always use a few extra helpers, bring a shovel, a steel rake and some work gloves. Our small but highly skilled and enthusiastic crew made significant progress today finishing some of the ground prep, grooming the road for equipment access, and unloading, and staging the large concrete blocks for the side wall. Several loads of blocks have been shuttled down to the range and put in place. This work will continue tomorrow and we are hoping to have that phase of the work completed tomorrow.

— ALSO —

Indoor range closure for Sunday, 10/18
Work will be starting tomorrow on the central air conditioning systems for the clubhouse. In order for the contractors to do this work it will be necessary to have the indoor range closed starting 7:00 AM and it will remain closed until the work is completed later in the day. We will post a notice when the range is opened again.

Update October 15, 2020

Big Bore Range Closed Saturday, 10/17/20
We will be getting the concrete block delivered this Saturday, 10/17 starting at 9:00 AM. There will be two truckloads delivered. This block will form the protective wall between the range and the pond.

While the blocks are being unloaded, we will need a few people to help with the balance of the prep work for their placement at the range. A few people are needed to walk a small plate compactor around and help with some rake-and-shovel work. We will be gathering at the club for 8AM or so to get set up and started on the work, and await the arrival of the truck.

This will require the range be closed on Saturday, and work may run into Sunday morning as well. When the work is finished, the Range Closed sign at the gate will be removed.

Update October 9, 2020

Big Bore Range Closed This Weekend
We will be doing some cleanup work at the backstop berm, retrieving the partially buried target stands and maybe moving the dirt back a bit to get back our 100 yard line. If time allows and we have the details worked out, there is some prep work that we may do for the pond sidewall also.

This will of course require the range be closed for much of Saturday, and a possibility that this work may run into Sunday as well. When the work is finished, the Range Closed sign at the gate will be removed.

Update October 2, 2020

Construction Update
For those who haven’t walked down the hill to check, the construction project hit a milestone this week – the footings are complete! The contractors dug holes for each upright support post, inserted tubes into the ground, poured the concrete, and set the connector bases that the steel uprights will rest on.

This is great progress, and things have been going smoothly. When they finished, the contractors also graded the range, and moved all the soil from the 25 yard berm back, to build up the 100 yard berm.

The Big Bore Range is Temporarily Open!
This is all good news for the club, but great news for shooters. It’ll take a couple weeks for the concrete to fully set, and in the meantime, the range will be open for use during normal range hours. The temporary rules are:

  • DO NOT TOUCH any of the footings
  • All targets must be placed up against the 100 yard berm. New target stands have been placed all the way down at 100 yards, and should not be moved. If you’d like to shoot shorter distances, shooters need to move forward of the shelter. For instance, if you’d like to shoot handgun at 10 yards, the shooter should be standing at the 90 yard line, so that the target is on the stand at the 100 yard line.
  • All shooters need to work together to ensure safe range use. Communicate with everyone else on the line, and if rifle and pistol shooters are there at the same time, they must take turns so no one is downrange while someone else is shooting.

As always, thank you for your patience during this project. When the steel baffles are ready to be installed, the range will be closed again to finish construction. Keep and eye out for updates.

Update September 9, 2020

The long-awaited construction project on the Big Bore Range is breaking ground this week!

On Wednesday, September 9, 2020, the contractor will begin prepping the site for construction, followed by clearing the space behind the 25 yard berm. As a result, the Big Bore Range will be closed September 9 – 11. It will reopen Saturday, September 12, and remain open through Sunday, September 13.

Starting on Monday, September 14, the range will close again, until further notice as the contractors begin digging the footings for the supports of the new No Blue Sky (NBS) system.

We will be in constant communication with the contractors, and will open the range whenever it is safe to do so. Please check back for updates.

Once completed, our No Blue Sky system will look similar
to this, except with fewer support posts and steel baffles.

Once completed, the NBS system will be a series of overhead steel baffles running downrange. From the firing line, shooters will not be able to see above the backstop (hence, “no blue sky”), which means any stray round that might miss the backstop will be stopped by the baffles before it could leave the range. This will increase range safety.

Check out the Summer 2020 newsletter for more details on this project.

Photos of range construction will be uploaded to the Club’s flickr page.

Clubhouse and Indoor Range Reopen 9/9/20

Beginning Wednesday, September 9th, the Clubhouse and Indoor Range will reopen to members (and family). Everyone entering the building must sign in on the contact tracing log on the porch, and while inside any part of the building, wear a mask at all times and maintain a 6′ physical distance from anyone not from their own household.

Physical distancing is also required in the Indoor Range. If range use exceeds this distancing, arriving shooters must wait until others leave. Anyone shooting is asked to be mindful of members waiting. Surfaces should be sanitized before and after touching them (ie, light switches, door knobs, restroom surfaces), and hands should be washed or sanitized frequently. The Reznor air handler should be on AT ALL TIMES when the indoor range is occupied.

All COVID-19 safety guidelines must be observed:

  • Stay more than 6′ away from others whenever possible
  • Masks must be worn when social distancing is not possible
  • Wash or sanitize your hands often
  • If you aren’t feeling well, stay home and contact your doctor

LSC Open to the Public Effective 7/14/20

Update as of July 14, 2020

The Lowell Sportsmen’s Club is once again open to the public for scheduled public events.

This includes Sunday/Wednesday Trap and Skeet, Thursday Night Archery, Friday Night Fun Shoot, and other PUBLIC events listed on our calendar. More events will be added as they are rescheduled.

The Clubhouse and Indoor Range remain closed due to the new office construction project. When this project is completed and the main hall cleaned up and organized, the Clubhouse and Indoor Range will once again be available for use.

All COVID-19 safety guidelines must be observed:

  • Stay more than 6′ away from others whenever possible
  • Masks must be worn when social distancing is not possible
  • Wash or sanitize your hands often
  • If you aren’t feeling well, stay home and contact your doctor

LSC Reopened Effective May 18th

Update as of May 18th, 2020

Members of the Lowell Sportsmen’s Club:

The Lowell Sportsmen’s Club is once again open, effective immediately, with conditions.

The reopening plan for Massachusetts, announced this morning during Governor Baker’s press conference, permits outdoor shooting ranges to open on May 18th. Therefore, the gate code will be reset to the code that was contained in your 2020 membership letter. Members may once again use Club facilities.

Although outdoor ranges are open, the Clubhouse and Indoor Range remain closed.

Wednesday/Sunday Skeet and Trap, along with Thursday night Archery, will resume as normal, provided range officers are available. Range-specific COVID-19 rules are posted at these ranges and must be observed.

No guests are permitted.

All COVID-19 safety guidelines must be observed:

  • Stay more than 6′ away from others whenever possible
  • Masks must be worn when social distancing is not possible
  • Wash or sanitize your hands often
  • If you aren’t feeling well, stay home and contact your doctor

The Club is in the process of acquiring hand sanitizer to make available at the ranges. In the meantime, and whenever possible, please bring your own.

Health officials are highlighting that during the reopening process, it is important to still be smart and use common sense regarding person health.

Thanks to all members for enduring the temporary Club closure during this global emergency.

COVID-19 Update + Club Reopening

From President Brian Campbell:

At the May 5th Eboard meeting, the eboard voted to open the club on a limited basis, starting Saturday May 9th. These limits are:

  • Members ONLY, no guests. Wearing of your membership badge will be required as always, with more stringent enforcement. If you want to use a range, your membership badge must be worn and be visible.
  • Outdoor ranges ONLY (Trap, Skeet, Big Bore, .22, Archery, Black Powder, Pond, and boating.)
  • The Indoor Range and Clubhouse will remain CLOSED. This includes the restroom – plan accordingly.
  • All special events are still suspended. However, Sunday/Wednesday trap and skeet, Thursday archery, and First Saturday Black Powder will resume, provided range officers are available.
  • The eboard will continue with regular virtual meetings, but monthly general meetings remain suspended.

You, as members, are responsible to follow the rules to minimize the risk to yourself and others. You are ultimately responsible for your own health and safety. Those members using our outdoor ranges will need to follow the Massachusetts COVID-19 Prevention guidelines, and the guidelines suggested by GOAL posted at each range:

  • Stay 6 feet away from others, and masks are required when this is not possible
  • Don’t shake hands, avoid groups of more than 10 people
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Avoid sharing equipment
  • Clean things before and after you touch them (like shooting stations and chairs) with household cleaning spray or wipes (please bring from home)
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow, not your hand
  • And as always, observe all firearm and range safety practices

Specific rules for Trap (Thanks Phil Sullivan for putting this together)

  • Maximum number of shooters on the trap range at one time is five members. No non-members or non-shooters allowed. No observers.
  • Only one person opens/closes the trap house and loads the trap machines. The trap house is too tight for more than one person.
  • Only one person opens/closes the garage and gets out/puts away the call boxes and controller.
  • A third person or the garage person should bring clays down to the trap house to replenish what
    was used that day.
  • Do not use a scorer as the scoring materials are typically handled by more than one person.
  • If there are more than three shooters at the range, shooters 4 and/or 5 should do nothing except stay 6-10’ away from everybody else until it’s their turn at the shooting line.
  • When moving from station five to station one leave 6-10’ between you and the shooters on the
    line.
  • Pick up your own empty hulls.
  • Put your payment in an envelope or plastic bag that you provide noting the number of rounds you shot and how much money you put in the envelope/bag. You must bring exact change. Bring your own pen. Pens should not be shared. Drop your own envelope in the caretaker’s mailbox.

COVID-19 Update + Letter from the President

To My Fellow Lowell Sportsmen’s Club Members,

Massachusetts is currently in the middle of an unprecedented health crisis. The Coronavirus, or COVID-19, is sweeping through our state and nation, leaving behind severe hardships and multiple deaths. Many of my own family members and friends are presently on the frontlines in the battle against the ravages of COVID-19.

The Governor of Massachusetts, Charlie Baker, has put forth executive orders mandating all non-essential businesses and services to be closed until at least the 4th of May. In his initial order ranges and stores selling firearms were on the list of essential services. However, within a week the Baker administration reversed course and removed both services from the list. Board members of the Lowell Sportsmen’s Club have reached out to various sources seeking clarification of the governor’s order. We have also contacted our many sister clubs in the area to inquire how they are addressing this situation.

The Lowell Sportsmen’s Club Board of Directors met by conference call on Tuesday evening the 7th of April. After two hours of discussion, and at times a passionate debate, we came to the conclusion to close our club and all its facilities. Therefore, effective Saturday April 11, 2020, the front gate lock combination will be changed and all ranges, indoors and out, will be closed. This rule also includes the clubhouse, fishpond, and the boating facilities. The club’s closure will only remain in effect until the governor lifts the order on gun stores and ranges, and it is once again safe for people to gather in large groups. The board made this decision for the consideration of the health and safety of our members, many of whom are in the most vulnerable population for acquiring this disease.

Although individuals will be permitted to hike the surrounding grounds for physical activity, during this time, we encourage all members to respect the board’s decision and refrain from traveling to the club for any reason. If any members are observed violating this decision by utilizing ranges or other facilities, they will be reported to the EBoard and actions of suspension to termination of membership will be considered.

We sincerely hope our members understand the reasoning behind the EBoard’s decision to take this profound step. We are all waiting the time when we can again enjoy a sport we love.

Please feel free to contact any board member or myself with questions or comments regarding this rule.
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy!

Brian D. Campbell COL, USA (ret)
President Lowell Sportsmen’s Club

COVID-19 Update – April 11th, 2020

What This Means

  • Effective Saturday, April 11th, the code of the main gate at the street will be changed to prevent access to the property.
  • All ranges, including archery and the fishing pond, as well as the clubhouse, are closed.
  • Members who wish to walk the Club property for exercise are permitted to park outside the main gate and walk in. Badges must be visible at all times. Also, you are responsible for observing all COVID-19 safety guidelines, which includes not touching tables, benches, or other surfaces within the Club. We are not able to keep everything disinfected, so it is your responsibility to practice social distancing and good hygiene at all times.
  • In support of law enforcement, the Middlesex Sheriffs and Chelmsford Police will still use the Club to train and qualify their officers. When using the Club, these departments are required to follow strict disinfecting and cleanup procedures before and after their sessions. Considering the emergency conditions we face, preventing law enforcement from being at their best would be a disservice to our community.
  • General monthly meetings are suspended until further notice. Although using a conference call for E-Board meetings works, it doesn’t seem like a feasible option for a general meeting. We are continuing to explore Zoom and other video conferencing tools, and members will be notified if we are able to conduct a virtual meeting. In the meantime, First and Second membership readings are also suspended, and Membership Secretary Darlene Parker will be contacting the pending applicants. As always, any member is welcome to attend an E-Board meeting; that has not changed. Contact President Brian Campbell for information on how to join the conference call.
  • We will also be making special arrangements utility companies who routinely service the Club. Jim Martin will be coordinating with them during this time, as well as anyone else who needs emergency access to the property.

This is an unprecedented time for all of us. The E-Board made this decision only after exhaustive discussion, because it was not the outcome anyone wanted, but was clearly the only choice under the circumstances. The LSC is a member-run club, and everyone’s input is welcome and valued. Please direct comments to Brian Campbell, or any member of the E-Board.

The E-Board will endeavor to keep the membership as up to date as possible as conditions change. Please watch your email, the website, and Facebook for additional updates. We’re all in this together. Keeping safe and healthy is the best way we can get through this.

COVID-19 Safety Guidelines:

  • Stay home as much as possible and avoid close contact with others
  • Stay 6 feet away from others
  • Don’t shake hands
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Clean things before and after you touch them (like doorknobs and tabletops) with household cleaning spray or wipes (please bring from home)
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow, not your hand
