The Pond is Open for 2017!

Now that colder weather has set in and the pond is frozen, it’s open to members for ice fishing.

Please Note: The Pond Committee asked that people stay away from both the inflow and outflow areas however, as the ice there is still unsafe.

Remember, fishing at the pond is limited to members who have purchased a fishing button ($20). 2017 fishing buttons are available from any Pond Committee member, and at all regular meetings. Please see John Lemasurier, John Abbott, Bill Potter, Doug Perry, Jim Martin, or Matt Franco to purchase a button.

The Pond Committee will also be hosting various fishing events this year – get your tackle ready and come on down!

For more information on fishing events, or if you are interested in getting involved, please contact the Pond Committee.

2017 Membership Renewals Going Out Now!

Members will be receiving their 2017 membership renewal notifications soon, either by email or a letter in the mail.

If you get these by email and don’t see it this week, please be sure to check your spam folder.

Also, if you have been getting the renewals by mail, please consider saving the club postage and printing costs and opting to receiving your renewals by email.

Something new this year is the ability to pay your membership dues online. The Club set up a Paypal account to facilitate online payments, and members are welcome to use this new method or send in a traditional check. Please note that there is a small processing fee with online payments to cover the Paypal charges.

If you have any questions about your membership, dues payments, or membership of the Lowell Sportsmen’s Club in general, please contact Membership Secretary Darlene Parker at membership@lowellsc.org or 978-479-0469.

Trap shooting for the winter 2016-17 and beyond

We have started an email communication program for the Wednesday morning trap group for the winter months. All participants check in with each other on Tuesday to verify if we will be shooting Wednesday morning.

If anyone would like to join the group please contact John Siljander at jsiljander@comcast.net

Sunday trap has been suspended until spring because of low participation.

We will be looking for people to participate in the trap league for the 2017 season. A meeting date will be announced for a February meeting. All interested parties are invited to attend.

Those who have not participated in trap and are interested in trying it will be very welcome.

Having Fun on 10/22 with our Ruger 10/22s

The LSC’s first Ruger 10/22 Fun Shoot took place on Oct. 22, 2016 (10/22 – get it?), despite the day being rainy and dreary. Twelve 10/22 enthusiasts braved the weather for a fun day of .22 plinking and challenges.
lsc-2016-10-22-fun-shoot

The fun shoot was divided into four stages, in an effort to cater to 10/22s set up to shoot with iron sights, red dots, or scopes. The first stage was the Bottle Shoot. Shooters had 15 seconds and three 10-round magazines (although the time limit made reloads challenging) to knock five bottles off the target stand. Most shooter managed to connect with a majority of the bottles, and this stage opened the event with some energy.

Stage 2 catered to scoped rifles. Shooters faced a target with five bullseyes, and took their time to put one shot on each target. 9- and 10-ring shots scored two points, and other shots in the black scored one point, so slow and steady precision, and zeroed rifle, and good trigger control was required.

Stage 3 favored red dots, and two shooters at a time went head-to-head on the dueling tree. Shooters had 30 seconds and three 10-round magazines to battle back and forth, and when the buzzer went off, shooters earned points for each paddle that ended up on their opponent’s side. Every match up was fairly even, with paddles swinging back and forth as the .22 rounds pinged off them, but wherever the paddles were when the buzzer went off told the story.

The final stage proved to be the most challenging by far. This one all required either a scope or excellent eyesight, as the targets were jawbreaker candies sitting atop golf tees. Each shooter took ten shots at five of the candy targets, with most shooters managing to hit two or three. Each hit was exciting though, as the colorful candy exploded into a cloud of dust to cheers from the crowd.

After the final scores were tallied, Herb Cline came out on top, followed closely by Pattie Brick, and then a three-way tie for third place: Ray Anaganes, Jeff Gealow, and Kevin Kelley Sr. Top prizes included a BMF Actuator, 10/22 padded cleaning mat, Ruger gun sock, and Ruger eye and ear protection set. And thanks to donated prizes from Ruger, everyone went home with a Ruger hat, visor, or cup.

Special thanks to everyone who helped make this event possible, by donating prizes, targets, or serving as range officers: Dennis Brick, Charlie O’Donnell, Herb Cline, Brian Campbell, and Brian Herzog. Even with the rain everyone had a good time – how can you not when everyone is out to have fun with their 10/22s? Be sure to mark your calendar for the next event on 10/22/2017 – see you then!

New Floor for the Skeet Shelter

Next time you’re at the club, be sure to stop by the Skeet Field to check out the new floor installed this week in the shelter (or see the picture below).

The volunteer crew of members consisted of Clive Nelson, Buzz Brody, Gary Dear, led by the intrepid Ralph Nardone, did all the work in a day and a half, and it’s a top-notch job. The new red paver floor will cut down on the dust from the previous stone and gravel floor, is much nicer to stand on and clean, and will also shed water better. Thanks to these members for putting in some real back-breaking work to improve the club.

The Skeet shelter also received a new chimney for the wood-burning stove, in preparation for winter skeet shooting. The stove is on its last legs however, so if you have an extra wood-burning stove you’re not using and would be willing to donate to the club, please talk to Clive Nelson or Ralph Nardone and it will be put to good use immediately.
